Advent Character Reflection: Mary and the baby

Nativity - Joseph & Jesus

Introduction – as students sit down, remind them to be quiet because of the baby. When all quiet, look at the images of the baby and his parents from the Nativity.  You could use a variety of images of new born babies, to begin the discussion.

This is one of the babies who plays Jesus. I wonder what part babies and mothers have to play in the Nativity Story? Let’s listen to what the Bible tells us and find out more

The angel came to Mary and said, “Greetings! The Lord has blessed you and is with you.” But Mary was very confused by what the angel said. Mary wondered, “What does this mean?”  The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, because God is pleased with you. 31 Listen! You will become pregnant. You will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great, and people will call him the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of King David, his ancestor. 33 He will rule over the people of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end.” International Children’s Bible

Here, we think about Mary as she waits for her baby to be born.  In the play you are about to see, Mary sings a beautiful song about how she is feeling.  Let’s think about some wonder questions together.

We wonder …

  • What do you think a new born baby is like?
  • What did your family feel when you were born?
  • What it is like getting ready for a baby?
  • How Mary felt, waiting for her baby?
  • What do new babies need?
